When you are expecting a baby, there are many items that you will have to buy; bottles, bibs, clothing, socks, etc.  And one of the most important is baby bedding.  Babies sleep a lot and baby bedding fabric is something to consider because an infant’s skin is very sensitive and you don’t want to buy anything that will cause a rash or be too rough on your newborn’s skin.

Most people agree that baby bedding fabric made of one hundred percent cotton is the best for babies’ skin because it is hypoallergenic and all natural.  Cotton is also a breathable fabric, unlike polyester, so it won’t hold sweat and allows for good air circulation.

Organic cotton sheets are becoming very popular because they are supposedly superior to regular cotton sheets.  There are reports of the organic cotton sheets being grown from organically grown cotton and manufactured without chemicals which makes them softer and safer for infants.

Some may want custom bedding for the crib and there are a couple of ways to accomplish this.  You can mix and match sets from existing bedding sets, or you can make your own sets or have someone else make them by hand.  There are sites online that offer this service if you don’t sew and you don’t know anyone who does.

This could be an option for some special bedding for your bundle of joy, but babies are messy and you will need lots of crib sets so you will still probably end up buying some mass produced nursery bedding sets as well.

Something else to consider is will you have a square or a round crib?  They require different sheets to fit properly and a round crib may limit your choices.

Even if you know in advance what the sex of your baby is, you may still want gender neutral sheet sets in case you have a boy and a girl, if you don’t want to go the ‘pink for girls’ and ‘blue for boys route’, or if you want to use the bedding in the future for the babies you will have.

One last thing to take into consideration would be, will you want to use the bedding when your baby becomes a toddler?  If so, you may want to consider the pattern and print of the bed sets so as not to have something that’s fine for an infant but too infantile for a toddler.

There are wonderful sets in colors such as blue, green, brown, etc, and there are gender neutral designs such as jungle designs, and certain cartoon characters, like Winnie the Pooh, or Mickey Mouse, Sesame Street.
